Hockey: St. Mary's ices Matignon Originally Published on Thursday, January 05, 2012 The St. Mary's boys hockey team got the jump on Matignon with three first period goals and never looked back in a 5-2 win Wednesday at Connery Rink.

The Spartans (6-1-1), 3-0 Catholic Central League) didn't waste any time getting on the board. Tim Aylward scored 1:38 into the game with Cam O'Neil and Frank Moreschi getting the assists. Five minutes later, Jarrod Fitzpatrick made it 2-0 with Tom Braswell and Nikko Markham providing the assists. Jordan Manthorne staked the Spartans to a 3-0 lead 12:14 into the period with Bobby Mullins assisting.

The lead ballooned to 4-0 thanks to an Andrew Markham goal 6:46 into the second period (Mullins and Brendan Mageary assisted). Matignon (2-4) finally made a little headway when Ricky Canales scored late in the second. Matignon cut the lead to 4-2 on another Canales goal early in the final period, but the Spartans pulled away for good on a goal by O'Neill (Ryan Madden assist) with 4:07 remaining in the game. Bailey MacBurnie and Steve Poliskey split the game in net.
